Jacob Myron Koopee, Hopi Pueblo Potter

Hopi Pueblo artist signature of Jacob Myron Koopee (1970-2011) Hopi-TewaJacob Myron Koopee (1970-2011), also known as Jake Nampeyo, was a remarkably innovative Hopi-Tewa artist celebrated for blending traditional Sikyatki-inspired designs with a distinctly modern sensibility. In this seed jar — likely an early work — Koopee limited the painted design to the upper shoulder of the vessel, bordered by a dark brown rim and a dark framing line at the midpoint. The jar features four carefully balanced panels, alternating between two unique design motifs placed opposite one another. Each element — whether a line, square, or triangle — is meticulously rendered, showcasing the precision and complexity that became Koopee's hallmark.

Koopee was the grandson of Marie Koopee, great-grandson of Nellie Nampeyo, and great-great-grandson of the renowned Nampeyo of Hano. By the time of his untimely passing in 2011 at just 41 years old, he had firmly established himself as one of the most accomplished and respected contemporary Hopi potters. His loss was deeply felt in the world of Pueblo pottery, and his work remains highly sought after by collectors for its artistry and innovation.
