An image of a Hopi Sai-astasana Katsina is the design element of the end pieces in this mid-century modern Hopi silver overlay cardigan sweater clip. Popular in the 1950s and 1960s, cardigan clips were used to hold a sweater draped over the shoulders. Two layers of silver are soldered together with the design cut out of the top section. The Katsina’s face is fashioned with two rectangular eyes and a triangular mouth. The one horn and the topknot are carefully etched to resemble feathers.

According to Barton Wright in Kachinas: A Hopi Artist’s Documentary: “Sai-astasana is the Zuni Rain Priest of the North who accompanies the Salako when they appear at Zuni.  At Hopi he usually appears with other Zuni kachinas such as Shulawitsi, Pautiwa, Sipikne, and Hakto in a Mixed Dance.”

This Retro Hopi Pueblo Silver Overlay Sweater Clip is unsigned.

Condition: The set is in excellent condition.

Provenance:  From the inheritance of a daughter of the Balcomb family, owners of several art galleries of Native American art and objects in the post-WWII era until the 1970s when they closed their last gallery.
