Nancy Lewis was a Hopi potter from the First Mesa village Sichomovi. She was actively making pottery between 1960-1980. Several of her pottery vessels are in the collection of the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
This small cylindrical jar was made in the style of pottery by the Frog Woman and Feather Woman families, that is, with a white slip. The design is a stylized depiction of a bird. It is repeated on opposite sides of the vessel. There is a wide brown framing just below the rim and, below that, are two thinner framing lines.
The jar is signed Nancy Lewis on the base and was purchased by the current owner in the early 1980s.
Condition: this Hopi Small White Cylindrical Jar is in very good condition with minor scratches to the brown pigment
Provenance: from the collection of a gentleman from Colorado Springs, Colorado
