John Moyers' Rooftop Meeting (1999) is a compelling oil on canvas that stands apart from much of his figurative work. Known for his evocative portrayals of Native American life and culture, Moyers shifts his focus here to architecture and atmosphere in a distinctly Southwestern Pueblo scene. The painting captures the quiet geometry of adobe structures under strong desert light, where sharp diagonal shadows carve across the canvas in a masterful play of tone and form.
Amid the stillness of the multi-story Pueblo buildings, three small figures gather on a rooftop in the distance — engaged in a private conversation we're not privy to. Their understated presence draws the viewer in, inviting contemplation and storytelling.
Signed, dated 1999, and magnificently framed, this work reflects both Moyers' deep connection to the Southwest and his skillful versatility. Raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the son of renowned Cowboy Artists of America painter William Moyers, John was surrounded by art from a young age. He studied at the Laguna Beach School of Art and the California Institute for the Arts under a Walt Disney Studio scholarship. A formative plein air workshop in British Columbia with artist Robert Lougheed helped shape his lifelong approach to observation and composition.
John Moyers (1958- ) has received wide acclaim, earning honors from the Prix de West at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum. As a long-time member and past president of the Cowboy Artists of America, he has distinguished himself with award-winning work in both oil and water media. He and his wife, artist Terri Moyers, live and paint in California, continuing to draw inspiration from annual trips to Canada, the Southwest, and Hawaii.
