This untitled painting by the late artist John Nieto depicts a Pueblo woman scooping water into a pottery jar. Nieto, an artist of Mescalero Apache and Hispanic descent, was renowned for his unique and vibrant style. This piece is reminiscent of Edward Curtis's iconic photograph of an Acoma woman collecting water from a pool, but Nieto's version brings a fresh, colorful perspective to this timeless custom.
The painting's central figure, a Pueblo woman, kneels majestically at the water's edge. Her striking attire is a focal point, with a vibrant shawl draped over a rich burgundy skirt and a bright blue and white blouse that adds a spot of light to the scene. She holds a pottery jar, dipping it into the water source, with a second, spare jar waiting nearby.
John Nieto (1936-2018) sets this figure against an expansive, abstract background of deep purple and green, accented with flashes of orange and red. The background is divided by thin lines of dark blue and red, which cleverly echo the colors of the woman's clothing. This brilliant use of color and composition highlights not only the beauty of the scene but also the lasting traditions of Pueblo women.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, John Nieto's painting serves as a vivid historical record. It beautifully documents the life and responsibilities of Pueblo women, who traditionally managed all household chores, including tasks like applying new mud to adobe homes, crafting pottery, and, as shown here, the crucial work of bringing water home for their families.
John Nieto's long list of accomplishments includes international exhibitions, receiving the New Mexico Governor's Award for Achievement in the Arts, and even having a painting displayed in the White House's Oval Office. The signature "Nieto" is visible in the middle-left of this particular canvas. Today, Nieto is remembered as a significant and highly influential artist whose work masterfully blends cultural tradition with a distinct, modern style.
