Isleta Pueblo artist Ed Jojola has the magical ability to incorporate an entire slice of pueblo life into less than 35 square inches. This window into life at Isleta shows 2 natives of the village, wrapped in a colorful blanket, standing on rooftop contemplating the possibility of rain—something very rare in New Mexico.
The main items of the painting are the colorful blanketed pueblo natives, but dominating the imagery is the wonderful adobe home expanding from one side of the painting to the other. There are vigas protruding from the buildings and a traditional stepladder leaning against the adobe building. Also seen is the orno (oven) used for baking bread. Jojola is a master at presenting his village for others to enjoy.
The painting is framed by the artist, signed Shirpoyo with his hallmark and dated 2011 in lower right.
PERSONAL NOTE: The paintings of Ed Jojola were a regular feature at the gallery until his son passed away a couple years ago, at which time he stopped painting for quite some time. This past December, his wife passed away and he has now decided it is best for him to continue the art career he loves. We are pleased to have more of his paintings in the gallery and we hope to have them on a regular basis.
