It is a rare thing for this artist to paint any subject outside of his native pueblo of Isleta. This is no exception. What a great theme to portray: a Laguna Eagle Dance that is performed at Isleta Pueblo. It is a stunning day in New Mexico illustrated by the crisp blue sky and a few clouds ambling along. On top of an adobe building stand observers of this important dance.

This painting of three pueblo eagle dancers is testimony to his brilliance in painting—especially at such a small scale. The detail in the dancers' skirts and sashes and in the feathers comprising the wings of the dancers indicates his attention to detail. There are also several pueblo drummers behind the dancers and more observers behind them.

Most times, non-native people are not allowed to photograph or sketch any celebrations/dances of this type and we try to remember them as best we can if we are lucky enough to see them firsthand. Here is the best aide memoire for us: Shirpoyo has artfully captured a moment in time for us to peek into someone else's culture.

It is signed Shirpoyo with his hallmark and dated 2011.

PERSONAL NOTE: The paintings of Ed Jojola were a regular feature at the gallery until his son passed away a couple years ago, at which time he stopped painting for quite some time. This past December, his wife passed away and he has now decided it is best for him to continue the art career he loves. We are pleased to have more of his paintings in the gallery and we hope to have them on a regular basis.
