Beatien Yazz was first encouraged to paint by the Lippincotts, traders at the Wide Ruins Trading Post in Eastern Arizona. The couple encouraged young weavers by providing weaving classes, helping to develop the weaving style known today as Wide Ruins. In addition to helping young weavers, the Lippincotts saw promise in young Yazz and provided him with drawing and painting materials. He went on to become one of the most famous Navajo painters, as well as being known for illustrating several books.

Throughout his career, Beatien Yazz painted images from reservation life. He painted scenes with which he was familiar. He was especially good at painting horses.

This galloping blue horse comes charging across the painting at full speed. The artist has captured the wild abandon of the blue stallion, and evokes a feeling of freedom. The horse is placed on a small hill, with just a few clouds in the background.
