Kevin Red Starr, Crow Nation Painter

Internationally known contemporary Native American artist Kevin Red Star (1943- ) was born in Lodge Grass, Montana, in 1943.  Red Star was born into a family that valued its peoples’ art and culture, and so he learned at a very young age to do so as well.  His eventual admission to the then newly-established Institute of American Indian Arts was significant to his development, as his grade school years had been spent in institutions that suppressed his cultural heritage.  He received further education from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Red Star began showing publicly in 1965 and has an impressive array of one-man shows and group exhibits to his credit.   He was given an honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Art from the Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. His works are included in many prominent collections, including The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian, CM Russell Museum, the Heard Museum, Denver Art Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, Southwest Museum, Whitney Museum of Western Art, and the Institute of American Indian Arts Museum.  Red Star is generally regarded as one of the most prominent and significant figures in the world of Contemporary Native American painting.

Kevin Red Star (1943- ) signature Kevin Red Star seems to have created many portraits like this one.  What’s remarkable, though, is that each one of them is distinct. This one is particularly strong, with a wonderful maroon background and a tight, focused composition.  Red Star’s subject here is a Native man wearing traditional clothing. He’s looking to his left, allowing the viewer to see his face in profile. His black hair and thick, long eyebrows leap out at the viewer.  Most importantly, the man has a gentle, appealing presence that is hard to define but immediately noticeable. Above him is a Buffalo Moon symbol in yellow—a nice touch that we’ve not seen in similar images. The painting is unframed, and is signed “Kevin Red Star” in lower right.
