Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

Signatures of Santana (1909-2002) and Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980) Pond Lily of San Ildefonso Pueblo, Po-woh-ge-oweengeThis small jar represents a fascinating moment of transition in the career of legendary potter Maria Martinez. Painted by her daughter-in-law, Santana, the piece features the co-signature Marie + Santana. This specific maker's mark defines a distinct era in Martinez's legacy, spanning from the passing of her husband Julian in 1943 until 1956, when her son Popovi Da stepped in as her primary painter.

This miniature vessel is likely the smallest we have seen from the duo. While its size might suggest a rushed process, Maria's commitment to quality ensures its perfection. The beautiful burnish, which gives the jar its rich luster, was most likely the work of Maria's sister, Clara, while the firing was likely handled by Maria's son, Adam.

Santana's intricate design covers the jar's upper half with a precise matte composition of diagonals, stepped elements, and small triangles. This "jewel" of a jar offers a unique glimpse into the collaborative legacy of the Martinez family during the mid-20th century.
