This exceptionally large Santo Domingo Pueblo polychrome dough bowl, dating to around 1900, is a remarkable example of utilitarian Pueblo pottery. The bowl was broken into three large sections at some point in its history and has since been professionally restored to its current condition. It remains in very good condition, with the repairs done in a way that respects its age and integrity.
The design is framed by thin double lines and painted with black pigment on white slip that extends from midpoint to the rim. The base of the bowl is roughly equal in height to the painted band, creating a balanced visual structure. Both the interior and exterior surfaces are stone polished, giving the bowl a soft sheen and a rich patina that reflects decades of handling and use.
The interior and base are slipped in a light red clay, with noticeable wear along the upper interior walls where the slip has been worn away. There is also rim wear, likely caused by the bowl being stored upside down on a shelf. These signs of use only add to its historical authenticity and character. This piece was certainly created for everyday utility, yet it retains a striking aesthetic presence and cultural value.
Condition: very good condition with three sections professionally restored to its current condition
