Although not used as frequently as turquoise in Native American jewelry, jasper is a stone with unique qualities that lends itself to fitting in with the Southwestern aesthetic. This well-made ring features a piece of jasper that combines deep shades of brown, black, tan and white.  The artist shaped the stone and set it in a handmade bezel and added a beautiful sunburst motif to the shank. Made by Diné of the Navajo Nation, this ring was extremely well executed and dates from the 1940s or 1950s.

For those who believe in the mysteries of minerals:

"Jasper is known as the ‘supreme nurturer'. It sustains and supports through times of stress, and brings tranquility and wholeness. Jasper provides protection and absorbs negative energy. It balances yin and yang. Jasper clears electromagnetic and environmental pollution, including radiation. It encourages honesty with [oneself]. Provides courage to assertively tackle problems. Aids quick-thinking and promotes organizational abilities. Jasper stimulates the imagination and transforms ideas into action. Prolongs sexual pleasure. It supports during prolonged illness and re-energizes the body." [caryl@charmsoflight.com]

Note: when we say Diné, as opposed to Navaho or Navajo, we are referring to the people and not the government.  Since 1969, their government refers to itself as the Navajo Nation.

Condition: very good condition.  This stone is not perfectly domed. It has been cut to incorporate facets towards one end of the stone. When the jasper stone hits a particular light, these facets are very visible and desirable.  The ring is unsigned.

Provenance: this Diné Single Arrowhead Shaped Jasper Gemstone Silver Ring is from a Colorado Southwest Indian Jewelry collection
