We received a collection of 10 small paintings of dancers and katsinas painted by Hopi artist Waldo Mootzka. We posted the ten paintings as a group and now we are posting them individually as we know more about each image.
This one is a katsina from Zuni Pueblo, as were several of the other ones in this group. Mootzka painted Hopi Katsinas, Zuni Katsinas and New Mexico Pueblo Dancers in the group of ten. He was apparently interested in exploring all aspects of the Native cultures.
This katsina is apparently a Hunter Katsina. We have not identified it by name as it is not illustrated in the book on Zuni Katsinas. He carries a bow in his left hand and has a quiver full of arrows suspended over his shoulder. His mask is blue, black and white and he wears an animal skin over his shoulder and around his back. Mootzka completed the painting using soft purple outlines and subtle, skillful shading.
The painting is signed “Mootzka” in the lower right.
