Diné of the Navajo Nation artist dual signatures of Harrison Begay (1917-2012) Haskay Yahne Yah (The Wandering Boy)Harrison Begay remained deeply connected to his heritage throughout his long artistic career, using his paintings to share glimpses of Diné life, beliefs, and ceremonial traditions. Still, as with many aspects of Navajo spirituality, some meanings behind his imagery remain known only to those within the community. This painting is a striking example. The central figure, referred to here as the Dark God, likely represents a participant in a healing ceremony, possibly the Night Chant, though the exact context is not confirmed. Regardless, the strength of the composition lies in its artistic beauty and spiritual resonance.

Begay was born in 1914 on the Navajo Reservation and studied at the Santa Fe Indian School under renowned art instructor Dorothy Dunn. Over a career that spanned more than 75 years, his elegant and distinctive painting style became widely influential, inspiring generations of Native artists.

Above the central figure hovers a buffalo shield, which may symbolize the presence of the sun spirit offering protection to the dancer and to those taking part in the ceremony. Surrounding motifs of clouds and rain reinforce themes of balance, healing, and sustenance central to Diné worldview.

Painted in the 1980s, this piece reflects the enduring power of cultural continuity. It is signed in the lower left with the artist's Diné name and in the lower right with his English name, Harrison Begay.
