This beautiful pottery OLLA, or water jar, was made by a Zia Pueblo artist. It likely dates to the late 1800s. As is often the case with works from this era, we are unable to attribute the piece to a specific artist or family.

The OLLA's form is well balanced and appealing. Its base and rim are just a bit wider than usual. As a result of this variation, the OLLA looks quite substantial, reminding the viewer of its original purpose as a functional household tool. Its coloration and designs are wonderful. The artist used black and red over cream, which is typical. However, on this piece, the tones are notably muted and subtle, working together beautifully to create an earthy palette. A beautiful patina and an attractive wear pattern further enhance the appeal.

A single design band appears, covering the OLLA from its rim down to a few inches above the base. The most notable elements here are the large red spirals, which hang down from the red band circling the rim. This spiral motif is common, but on most published examples it hangs down from a framing line near the shoulder or emerges up from the bottom of a design band. Here, the spirals position themselves as the primary design elements, with leaves, clouds and triangular forms serving as support. The end result is a piece that is strong, elegant, and unique.

Condition: excelent condition with an appealing wear pattern—small rim chips and abrasions, but no structural damage or restoration

Provenance: this Zia Pueblo Historic Polychrome OLLA with Hook Designs is from a private collection
