Among the most renowned turquoise jewelers are the Navajo and the Zuni. A stunning example of their craftsmanship is a belt buckle made by Alice Quam of Zuni Pueblo. This exquisite piece is adorned with a set of natural nugget turquoise gemstones, meticulously arranged over a silver back. The back of the buckle bears the stamp ‘A Q', signifying its creator, Alice Quam.

Archaeological excavations at nearby Chaco Canyon have unearthed more than 200,000 turquoise pieces at various sites, underscoring the gemstone's significance to the Zunis. For them, turquoise is associated with natural elements, so much so that the Zuni word for turquoise translates to ‘sky stone'.

The buckle features beautiful nuggets of turquoise encased in silver, covering its entire surface. The gemstones, varying in size, shine brightly and offer a calming visual experience. It's easy to see why this gemstone is such a cherished item among the people of Zuni Pueblo.
