Robert Montoya (Soe Khuwa Pin - Fog Mountain), a celebrated Pueblo painter (1947-2023) from Sandia and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblos, was a master of blending traditional and contemporary styles in his art. His exceptional talent earned him numerous notable awards and accolades, including the prestigious Best of Show at Santa Fe's Indian Market in 1973.
Born to renowned artist Gerónima Cruz Montoya and brother to Paul Montoya, Robert was deeply rooted in a legacy of creativity. Beyond his prolific visual arts career, he also distinguished himself as an architect and a respected tribal leader. His diverse educational background included St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe, an undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of New Mexico, and an MA from the University of Oklahoma.
Robert Montoya passed away on March 30, 2023, at an Albuquerque hospital, leaving behind a significant artistic and leadership legacy.
