Joe Maktima (Hopi/Laguna Pueblos, b. 1962): Modern Depictions of Pueblo Life
Award-winning Pueblo artist Joe Maktima is celebrated for his vibrant and modern depictions of Pueblo life and customs. Born in Winslow, Arizona in 1962, of Hopi and Laguna Pueblo heritage, Maktima grew up immersed in a family of artists in Flagstaff, fostering his innate talent.
His artistic journey truly began at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), from which he graduated in 1985. Immediately following, his exceptional promise was recognized with the prestigious "Most Promising Artist Award" at the Santa Fe Indian Market. His prominence continued to grow, notably when his painting, Evening Star, was selected for the Santa Fe Indian Market poster in 1999. In 2012, he was also featured in IAIA's significant 50/50 - Fifty Artists in Fifty Years exhibit.
Maktima's compelling work can be found in the esteemed Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is showcased in numerous galleries worldwide, solidifying his place as a leading contemporary Native American artist.
