This Hopi Pueblo Squash Katsina (Patung) doll by renowned carver Kevin Pochoema is a finely crafted and animated example of contemporary katsina artistry. Standing just under 8 inches tall, the figure is captured in a dynamic pose, balanced gracefully on one foot with yucca stalks in each hand.

The Squash Katsina, or Patung, is a Chief Katsina and plays a vital role in Hopi agricultural life, assisting in the growth of squash, one of the community's most important crops. Plants are central to the Hopi way of life, and plant-based katsinas like Patung serve as teaching tools and symbolic figures within ceremonial contexts. He appears most frequently on First Mesa and may have been derived from the Zuni tradition. Patung is easily recognized by his squash-shaped mask and the squash blossom that adorns the back of his head.

Kevin Pochoema's interpretation of Patung is notable for its clarity of form and refined organic qualities. The carving features minimal clothing and jewelry, placing visual emphasis on the katsina's natural form. The patina on the figure enhances the tactile and visual appeal. One of the most striking elements is the sculptural treatment of the head, which mirrors the rounded form and ridges of a squash, reinforcing the katsina's connection to the plant world.
