Helen Hardin, Santa Clara Pueblo Painter

Helen Hardin (1943-1984) Tsa-Sah-Wee-Eh - Little Standing Spruce blazed a trail and was at the forefront of Indian-influenced art and this acrylic on board painting is a perfect example of her particular talent and skills. This amazing work is deeply rooted and inspired by her Indian culture in its subject matter. With an effortless grace she uses modern materials and techniques to bring her history into the modern age with this intricate composition.

This wonderful acrylic painting depicts several figures of varying scale reminiscent of petroglyph drawings one would see on ancient rock walls. The background is a prototypical example of the detailed style in which Helen often worked. There are sun swirls, solid and dotted lines, stipes and different textures all undulating over and under each other giving this particular piece a subtle depth that is nothing short of captivating. There is a large face rendered in a semi-opaque turquoise color that also goes over and under the varied images of this piece, sometimes going over AND under the same figure. As is always the case with her, the execution of line and form is impeccable. Helen’s particular talent for densely rendering layer upon layer of objects while never allowing the work to become “busy” or muddied is brilliantly showcased here. The final effect is reminiscent of several cave or cliff drawings beautifully balanced together with a great sense of undulation, depth and movement.
