This original watercolor, titled Trading Seeds, was created by Diné of the Navajo Nation artist Narciso Abeyta, also known by his Diné name Ha So De. The painting presents a tender moment between two Diné women. The woman on the right appears older — possibly a mother, mentor, or elder — suggesting a quiet exchange of knowledge or tradition. Unlike many of his works where bold outlines and dynamic colors dominate, Abeyta's hand here is soft and composed. His signature style is still evident in the detailed textiles and the placement of melons and squash at the edges of the rug, yet the overall mood is serene and grounded.

Abeyta's color palette in Trading Seeds leans toward rich maroons and blues, accented by brighter tones that frame the scene. This restrained composition reflects the strength of quiet connection and shared experience. The work is elegant and intimate, a beautiful example of how Abeyta's artistry shines even in his more subtle moments.
Known for his distinct style and expressive forms, Narciso Abeyta (1918-1998) remains one of the most admired Diné painters. He studied at the Santa Fe Indian School under Dorothy Dunn and later at the University of New Mexico, where he trained with modernist Raymond Jonson. A Golden Gloves boxer and a Navajo Code Talker during World War II, Abeyta led a remarkable life. He and his wife Sylvia Ann raised a family of artists, including Tony Abeyta, Elizabeth Abeyta Rohrscheib, and Pablita Abeyta.

Diné of the Navajo Nation artist signature of Narciso Platero Abeyta (1918-1998) Ha So De - Fiercely AscendingDorothy Dunn once praised Abeyta's work for its broad brushwork and free-flowing energy, noting his ability to capture the spirit of movement over detail. That same spirit is present in Trading Seeds, even as it embraces a quieter, more contemplative tone.

The painting is signed Ha So De in the lower right and is beautifully presented under a wide white mat with a maroon interior band, housed in an elegant frame that complements its strength and stillness. Works by Abeyta rarely remain available for long, as collectors are quick to recognize the lasting impact of his vision.
