Juana Leno, Acoma Pueblo Pottery Matriarch

Juana Leno became active in making pottery in 1937 and quickly became known for her use of Anasazi Revival and Tularosa designs.  When she began making nacimientos, the figures were simple and bell shaped.  She always used natural pigments and her designs were very precise.  This nacimiento consists of a standing Mary, Joseph, three wise men, an angel, two shepherds and four barn animals.  The Christ Child is on a decorated clay manger.  All of the pieces are hand formed and painted with great detail.  The nacimiento is signed Leno Acoma, N Mex under the manger.
