Artist signature of Juana Leno, Acoma Pueblo Pottery MatriarchThis striking black-on-white jar by Acoma potter Juana Leno (1917-2000) Syo-ee-mee (Turquoise) demonstrates both exceptional technical skill and visual sophistication. With a simple yet elegant form, the jar features a high shoulder and a balanced profile — the opening and base are nearly equal in diameter, giving the vessel a harmonious and symmetrical silhouette.

The surface is covered in a finely executed design composed entirely of black-on-white elements. A bold vertical line structure serves as the foundation, with opposing zigzag motifs set at 45-degree angles intersecting across the jar's surface. These intersecting forms create rich black shapes that seem to pulse with visual energy, resulting in a mesmerizing composition that reads as both geometric and organic. The complexity and balance of the design create a dynamic sense of movement, making additional color unnecessary — the stark contrast alone is powerful enough to command attention.

While this pattern would be impressive on a flat surface, its application on a curved, three-dimensional form elevates the achievement. The flawless alignment of the pattern across the rounded jar speaks to Leno's remarkable precision and control. Executing such a complex design on a vessel of this shape requires extraordinary skill, and Leno handled it masterfully.

Though Juana Leno never sought widespread recognition, choosing instead to remain rooted in her community, her work is a testament to the depth of talent found among Acoma potters. This jar is a compelling example of her artistry and a powerful expression of Acoma ceramic tradition. The bottom of the jar is signed Leno, Acoma NM.

For years, I drove out to her home at Acomita and purchased pottery from her, and I was always charmed by how graceful she was and what beautiful work she produced. She was one of the few Acoma potters from whom I purchased. -Alexander E. Anthony, Jr.
