Acoma Pueblo artist Dolores Lewis Garcia divided the pottery jar design area into two sections—the neck design and body design. Around the neck, she placed double rows of rain clouds connected in chain-like fashion. On the main body, she placed four designs, each consisting of a double-bird motif—their heads connected by an orange square representing the body of each bird. The jar was slipped in a clean white clay and the designs were sparingly applied. Acoma potters have been known to fill all available surfaces with design, but Dolores chose to not do so on this jar.
Dolores Lewis Garcia (b.1938) is a daughter of Lucy M. Lewis. She was not taught the craft of pottery making by her mother, but learned by watching her. She says her ancient ancestors, the Anasazi, inspire her designs. Dolores’ sisters are Emma Mitchell, Mary Garcia, Anne Hansen, Cecelia Marie Lucero, and Carmel Haskaya.
