This piece by Beatien Yazz transports the viewer into an enchanted forest teeming with life. Reminiscent of a sunrise where the woods awaken to a new day, the scene features a dense harmony of owls, raccoons, deer, skunks, and birds interacting with bears.

While the imagery may evoke the style of Walt Disney Studios, the influence likely flowed in the opposite direction; Taos Pueblo artist Pop Chalee famously noted that Disney's aesthetic was deeply influenced by Native American paintings. Regardless of outside parallels, this work is a manifestation of Yazz's private "fantasy world," shaped by decades of observing wildlife in his Navajo homeland.

While animals are a recurring motif in Yazz's portfolio, this specific painting is a masterwork of scale, encompassing every creature he could envision. His broader body of work captures the essence of reservation life, including the playfulness of children and the presence of local animals, Navajo ceremonies, and his experiences with the Native American Church.

Born in 1928 on the Navajo Reservation, Jimmy Toddy (widely known by his pseudonym Beatien Yazz) showed artistic brilliance from a young age. His career was catalyzed by the Lippincotts, traders at the Wide Ruins Trading Post, who provided him with paper and colors. Under their mentorship, he eventually illustrated two books by Alberta Hannum regarding reservation life. The Lippincotts even provided him a dedicated studio space at the post, where he painted while observing the local community and travelers.

Artist signature of Beatien Yazz (*1928- ) Little No Shirt - Jimmy Toddy - Diné of the Navajo NationThe artist is known by several identities: His Diné name, kept private from outsiders according to tradition; Beatien Yazz: a name he signed with various spellings (e.g., Beatian Yazzia, B. Yazz); Jimmy Toddy: his English name; and Little No Shirt: a nickname given by the Lippincotts after the young artist began mimicking a shirtless traveler at the trading post.

Though previously reported to have passed away in 2012, a family member confirmed several years ago via photograph that Yazz was "alive and well." While his current status is unconfirmed, if he is still living today, he would be 98 years old.
