Lucy Year Flower Tafoya, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Artist signature of Lucy Year Flower, Santa Clara Potter

Santa Clara Pueblo artist Lucy Year Flower is an extraordinary artisan and very precise in the execution of her work. This globular shaped jar was exquisitely formed and provided a well-balanced surface to support the intricate design chosen. There are two Avanyu, one of which is above the mid-body and the other closer to the base. Between the two is a sun face, surrounded by gorgeous curved and beautifully flowing lines. Interspersed between all these elements are other floral-like designs.

The surprise design is a field of flowers encircling the lower one inch of the jar, visual evidence of her name Year Flower. The underside is signed Lucy Year Flower, Pojoaque - Santa Clara Pueblo 1991 inscribed into the clay.

Lucy Year Flower Tafoya (b. 1935) married into the Tafoya family. She married Joe Tafoya who was brother to Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower, the three of whom were the children of Camilio Tafoya and Agapita Silva Tafoya.

Condition: very good condition.

Provenance: this Black Carved Globular Pottery by Lucy Year Flower is from an exhibit by Eagle Dancer Gallery of Denver that toured several cities in China in 1981, during which the gallery was forbidden to sell items displayed. Purchased in 1985 by the current owners after the exhibit returned to Denver.
