This small black-on-black bowl is signed "Juanita" in what remains a faint signature. Juanita Vigil was a sister of Maria Martinez, Desideria and Clara Montoya, and Maximiliana Martinez. She was married to Romando Vigil, and they were parents of Carmelita Dunlap. Juanita is known for having made pottery but finding examples of her work is difficult.
This small bowl has a design of matte black elements suspended from the rim. The bottom of the bowl is matte black as is the interior. The exterior wall was beautifully polished.
Juanita Vigil (1898-1933) taught her children: Carmelita Vigil and Albert Vigil, to make pottery.
Condition: good condition with some minor abrasions at the rim.
Provenance: this Small Black-on-black bowl by Juanita Vigil of San Ildefonso Pueblo is from the collection of a client from Oklshoma
