Roger Deale was born in Shiprock, New Mexico. His parents are Leroy and Angie Deale. His grandmother, Virginia Deale, is an award-winning Navajo weaver. Roger was self-taught and his works often contain elements of Navajo lore and storytelling.

Canyon de Chelly has been occupied by various Native American groups for thousands of years. Its spectacular beauty has been the source of myths and legends of the Hopi and the Navajo.

One of the most well-known Navajo stories is that of Spider Woman, who taught the Navajo about beauty and the art of weaving. She taught the Navajo to balance the mind, body and soul in beauty. Spider Woman’s home is said to be at the top of Spider Rock in Canyon De Chelly. It is a place that reminds the people to follow her advice.
