The Spanish settlers who came to Northern New Mexico in the Seventeenth Century brought a distinct weaving tradition with them. For hundreds of years they used the wool of the Churro sheep and wooden floor looms to create blankets to keep them warm during the cold New Mexico winters. The designs on these blankets were creative masterpieces of design and color. This tradition continues today. Within the small Northern New Mexico village of Chimayo, families continue to weave beautiful textiles.

This Chimayo weaving is a perfect example of the continuing tradition of Spanish weaving in Northern New Mexico. It was woven on a traditional Spanish loom.  The weavers are members of the Centinela Traditional Arts of Chimayo, New Mexico.  There is a beautiful book, referenced below, that includes a history of Irvin Trujillo’s family’s participation in New Mexico’s weaving history, interviews with the viejitos and reviews of historic material.  The history is brought up through Jake Trujillo’s career to the present and includes photos and explanations of some of Irvin and Lisa Trujillo’s finest works.

The designs are distinctly Chimayo in origin.  The rug is comprised of brown, blue, red and white bands expressed in various weaving techniques throughout the textile.  The white and light brown yarns are woven vertically and the red, blue and dark brown laterally.

Condition:  the textile has just been professionally dry cleaned and is in excellent structural condition.  There is one spot of red color that did not come out during the cleaning process and will have to be removed through professional washing.  The red is more prominent on one side than the other.

Provenance: this Chimayo Banded Floor Rug with Fringes is from the collection of Chuck and Jan Rosenak, collectors and authors of Navajo folk art.
