Damacia Cordero Storyteller Figurine with Three Children [SOLD]

This excellent storyteller figurine is the work of Damacia Cordero. The figure depicts a mother with three children to whom she is telling a story or singing a song. This piece is a beautiful example of Cordero's distinctive style, characterized by its straight, elongated torso, long arched nose extending from the hairline, and protruding ears that resemble fins or wings. The minimal modeling of the adult's arms and the child's body further distinguishes this piece as one of Cordero's unique creations. This storyteller captures a sense of familial warmth and cultural tradition, making it a remarkable piece of Cochiti Pueblo art.

Damacia Cordero (1905-1989) was a renowned Cochiti Pueblo artist known for her distinctive storyteller figurines. Her works appear to have evolved from a much older figurative tradition and are easily recognized by their unique features. These include straight, elongated torsos, long arched noses extending from the hairline, and exaggerated, fin-like protruding ears.

Cordero began her pottery career around 1920 and was creating Singing Mother figurines by the 1950s. She was the daughter of Lucinda Suina, the second wife of Santiago Cordero, and the mother of Josephine Arquero, Gloria Herrera, Marie Laweka, and Martha Arquero. Her influence extended to her students, including her daughters and Dorothy Trujillo.

Throughout her career, Cordero's storyteller figurines have been celebrated for their artistic and cultural significance. Her work continues to be a cherished representation of Cochiti Pueblo's rich storytelling and pottery traditions.
