"Maiden Singers" is a stone lithograph by Hopi artist Dan Namingha, created in 1979 at the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque. Printed in an edition of 125, this impression is number 114. The image was produced using seven colors on buff Arches paper — a technically complex process that requires significant skill and precision in lithography.
In this composition, Namingha presents a group of maidens facing directly toward the viewer. Their masks and jewelry are clearly defined, and their matching hairstyles and feather adornments create a sense of unity. Their robes flow together into a single, cohesive form that dominates the image. Within this shape, Namingha creates a striking abstract composition, skillfully blending color and form. A full moon and a distant desert mesa complete the setting, subtly placed in the background.
The print is mounted to reveal its deckled edges, set over a maroon backing and within an olive green matte. It is framed under acrylic in a wooden frame. Along the lower edge, it is titled, signed, and numbered in pencil. The Tamarind Institute's chop mark appears at the lower right, along with an additional mark, likely belonging to the printer or the artist.
Dan Namingha (b. 1950) is a Hopi-Tewa painter and sculptor from a renowned family of artists. He is the son of Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo, the grandson of Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, and the great-grandson of Annie Healing Nampeyo. Raised on the Hopi reservation, Namingha studied at the University of Kansas, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the American Academy of Art. His work has been widely exhibited and collected, and he is considered one of the most accomplished and influential Native American artists of his generation.
