Nampeyo of Hano, Hopi-Tewa Potter and Matriarch

This small bowl was made by Nampeyo of Hano and likely dates to the first decade of the twentieth century. It features a painted eagle tail design, a signature Sikyátki-inspired motif that Nampeyo revived with great skill. One of the bowl's most distinctive features is the thickened rim, created by coiling an extra band of clay to provide added structure and support. This technique, along with her precise brushwork and symmetrical compositions, is a hallmark of Nampeyo's pottery.

On the base of the bowl is an original “From the Hopi Villages” label. These labels were used by the Fred Harvey Company, a major early promoter of Native arts through their curio shops and hotels across the Southwest. Nampeyo’s pottery was among the most celebrated in Harvey’s inventory, and she was one of the few Native artists to be identified by name and associated with branded marketing during that time. The presence of this label helps confirm the bowl’s authenticity and highlights the important role Nampeyo played in bringing Hopi pottery to a national audience. On the base of the bowl is an original From the Hopi Villages label. Nampeyo of Hano (1857-1942) is widely recognized as one of the most important Hopi potters. Her work is known for its elegant shapes, carefully balanced designs, and deep connection to ancestral traditions. Though she never signed her pieces, her distinctive style makes her pottery easily identifiable and highly valued.
