This historic Tesuque Pueblo water pitcher, dating to around 1900, is a striking and uncommon example of Pueblo pottery design. Its unique form features a rounded body that gently tapers upward to a square opening — a rare structural detail that adds both character and visual interest. The base is polished natural clay, providing a warm foundation for the painted decoration above.

Two tiers of designs encircle the vessel. The lower tier is adorned with a repeated circular pattern that draws the eye upward toward the mouth. A painted handle, also with circular motifs, slightly raised and fluid in form, connects the body to the square-rimmed opening.

The pitcher's proportions are charmingly irregular, reflecting its handmade origin and giving it a distinct personality. With its graceful wear and slightly uneven lines, this water pitcher offers a glimpse into the practical artistry of Tesuque potters at the turn of the 20th century — a piece that is both useful and beautifully expressive.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s at Tesuque Pueblo, Santa Fe traders such as Jake and Aaron Gold worked with pueblo potters to keep their shelves stocked with interesting and attractive items. Tesuque Pueblo artists were nearby and open to collaborating with the enterprising traders; these relationships resulted in the creation of many wonderful works in clay. This historic pottery pitcher is most likely one of those pieces.
