This Zuni Pueblo jar from the 1920s is a striking example of traditional pottery from the period, showcasing the refined skill and symbolic design elements characteristic of historic Zuni ceramics. Coil-built, the jar is finished with a white slip and painted with dark brown and red pigments, producing a bold, high-contrast palette typical of Zuni polychrome work.
The jar features prominent tiered panels of the iconic "Deer-in-Feather-House" design, with heartline deer enclosed within feathered frames. Between these central motifs are rows of four stylized Zuni birds painted in red. Additionally, two large floral medallions, placed on either side of the vessel, serve as bold visual focal points. Just above the shoulder, three sets of the Rain Bird motif appear — a classic Zuni element.
The form of the vessel is equally compelling, with proportions and curvature that reflect the potter's expert hand-building techniques. The surface exhibits natural wear consistent with age and use, lending authenticity that enhances its historic character.
Zuni Pueblo, located in western New Mexico, was home to a vibrant community of potters in the early 20th century. During the 1920s, Zuni artists continued to uphold traditional techniques and iconography while responding to a growing interest in Pueblo pottery among collectors and museums.
