A Masterpiece of Movement: Hopi Polychrome Jar by Rainy Naha

Artist signature of Rainell Naha (1949- ) Featherwoman - Hopi Pueblo, Hopituh Shi-nu-muThis striking polychrome jar is a definitive example of Rainy Naha's modern Hopi mastery. The vessel features a warm cream slip, serving as a canvas for two birds captured in a dynamic, swirling "dance." Positioned in perfect balance and gazing upward, the birds create a sense of fluid motion. The elegance of the piece is found in its restraint; the minimalist design — featuring only a subtle framing line at the rim with delicate cloud and rain symbology — directs the viewer's full attention to the central figures.

The palette is exceptionally rich, utilizing deep and light browns, stippled sienna, light orange, and vibrant yellow, accented by a deep burgundy. These tones integrate seamlessly with the background, emphasizing the jar's bold, hand-coiled symmetry.

The Artist & Legacy Rainy Naha (b. 1949), also known as "Feather Woman," carries forward one of the most celebrated lineages in Hopi pottery. She signs her work with the iconic feather hallmark of her mother, Helen Naha (the original Feather Woman), and continues the tradition of her grandmother, Paqua Naha (the first Frog Woman). This piece is not just a vessel, but a continuation of a multi-generational legacy of excellence in cream slip and polychrome pigments.
