Once Known Native American Carver

The Lizard Katsina (Monongya) belongs to the group known as the Fighting Katsinas — figures tasked with disciplining and chastising the Pueblo clowns when their behavior strays from traditional Hopi values.

Monongya embodies the Crotophytus (collared lizard), a species native to the Southwest known for its striking turquoise coloration and rapid speed.

Young Hopi men traditionally appeal to the Lizard Katsina to intercede on their behalf when searching for a beautiful wife. He typically appears during the Powamuya (Bean Ceremony) and the Mixed Katsina Dance.

Carved in a clean, traditional style, every detail of this figure reflects the physical traits of the Crotophytus lizard and traditional ceremonial regalia: The mask is painted a vibrant turquoise in homage to the collared lizard, topped with a pair of painted lizards on the crown. Flat, white-painted ears with crisp black borders frame the face, while a light fan of feathers adorns the back of the head.

The body features a classic yellow-over-red paint finish and is adorned with a turquoise nugget necklace. Hanging from his right side is an embroidered Hopi sash, complemented by a fox tail falling down his back and a pair of traditionally painted moccasins.

Based on the carving technique, paint composition, and minimalist detail, this carving confidently dates to the 1940s. Its unadorned, direct form is a true-to-life representation of how the Monongya appears during dances.

While the feather adornment at the back of the head has thinned with age, the doll remains structurally sound. It stands independently on its own, but also retains a small cord for wall display if preferred.
