This squash blossom necklace, with a pair of matching earrings, is a little unique for a Hopi artisan to produce. Rarely do Hopi Pueblo jewelers incorporate turquoise with silver overlay, but Phillip Sekaquaptewa set small triangular turquoise sections into this necklace. Each blossom has hook elements in overlay fashion and two triangles of turquoise. The naja has similar treatment. The blossoms are attached to double rows of handmade silver beads which are strung on woven wire. The earrings are equipped with hooks for pierced ears.
Phillip Sekaquaptewa (1948-2003) Weseoma was a Hopi, eagle clan, from the village of Hotevilla on Third Mesa. He was an award winner at Santa Fe Indian Market and was included in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” in 2002.
