This exceptional Zia Pueblo dough bowl, dating to approximately 1880, stands as one of the oldest and most distinguished examples we've had the privilege to offer. Despite its utilitarian origins, the bowl remains in remarkable condition, showcasing the resilience characteristic of Zia pottery. The craftsmanship is impeccable, and it is relatively lightweight for a bowl of its size.
The bowl features a slightly flared rim and a rich dark-red underbody, separated from the decorated upper half by a traditional double framing line. The painted design includes black, kite-shaped, stylized birds, accompanied by floral motifs set within rectangular frames. These elements are rendered with confident brushwork, adhering to design principles that originated during the San Pablo Polychrome period (1760-1820) and continued into the Zia Polychrome tradition.
Notably, within the stepped motif area, there is a triangular element commonly referred to as the "cadre" figure. This feature is characteristic of Zia bowls dating no later than the 1880s and is discussed in The Pottery of Zia Pueblo by Francis H. Harlow and Dwight P. Lanmon.
Dough bowls were not produced at Zia Pueblo before the late 1700s, possibly due to the challenges of firing large vessels or the sufficiency of smaller bowls for daily needs. The experience gained from creating large storage jars eventually led potters to experiment with dough bowls. The design elements on these bowls have persisted with relatively minimal change since their inception, reflecting a continuity of tradition and function.
This bowl not only serves as a utilitarian object but also as an example of cultural heritage of the Zia Pueblo. Its preservation offers a tangible connection to the past and a window into the daily lives and artistic expressions of its creators.
