The Evolution of Form: A New Challenge
When Linda Tafoya-Sanchez delivered this extraordinary jar to the gallery, she shared that its unique shape was born from a new tool and a creative challenge. For this piece, she began using a puki (the supportive base bowl used to form pottery) inherited from her aunt, Mary Esther Archuleta. Because a puki dictates a vessel's foundational shape, this new tool required Tafoya-Sanchez to completely rethink her design.
To accommodate the new base, she expanded the jar's diameter to be wider than usual for its height. This successful experiment resulted in a shorter, broader silhouette, providing an expansive, unprecedented canvas for her intricate artwork.
Technical Mastery and Intricate Imagery
This jar is a testament to technical mastery and creative innovation, seamlessly blending traditional stone-polished blackware with the sparkling texture of micaceous clay.
A rich band of micaceous clay wraps around the vessel just below the rim, appearing again throughout the body to create striking visual and textural contrasts. The body of the jar features a sophisticated arrangement of more than a dozen distinct geometric designs, including cloud motifs, lightning strikes, flowers, and zigzag patterns.
A Hidden Detail: Look closely at the spiral designs — on a select few, Linda Tafoya-Sanchez cleverly added a beak, transforming the abstract spiral into the head of a bird.
About the Artist: A Legendary Legacy
Linda Tafoya-Sanchez is a perfectionist whose attention to detail has made her an essential figure among contemporary Santa Clara Pueblo potters. She carries on a legendary family legacy as the daughter of Lee and Betty Tafoya and the granddaughter of the famed matriarch, Margaret Tafoya. She credits her aunt, Mary Esther Archuleta, with training her in the craft.
While deeply rooted in tradition, Tafoya-Sanchez is a pioneer. She has expanded beyond simple carved blackware by masterfully mixing polished finishes with matte black areas and integrating micaceous clay into her vessels.
A highly decorated artist, she has earned numerous awards at major exhibitions, including the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum. Her notable accolades include a prestigious commission to create a piece presented to the Prince of Spain.
