Polished and Micaceous Carved Black Canteen

We are thrilled to present another remarkable "first" in our gallery's history with Linda Tafoya-Sanchez: an exquisite, short, globular black canteen featuring both stone-polished and micaceous finishes.

This innovative vessel features a pair of Avanyu (water serpent) motifs, with one meticulously carved on each side. The composition masterfully balances two distinct surfaces — elegant, stone-polished blackware that reflects a mirror-like high gloss, and a shimmering layer of micaceous clay that covers the side lugs and encircles each Avanyu. The negative spaces between the circular Avanyu medallions are filled with crisply carved geometric spirals, creating a sophisticated interplay of light, shadow, and texture.

The canteen is fitted with a hand-carved wooden stopper. As Linda explains, this choice honors traditional utility: wood naturally expands upon absorbing moisture from the canteen's interior, creating a tighter, more secure seal than clay.

While the canteen's scale and hybrid textures are brilliantly modern, its execution remains deeply rooted in ancestral techniques. The vessel was hand-coiled from natural Santa Clara clay and achieved its deep, lustrous black finish through a traditional wood-fired reduction process.

The bottom of the canteen is signed: Linda Tafoya-Sanchez, Santa Clara Pueblo.

Linda Tafoya-Sanchez carries the legacy of one of the most prestigious lineages in Native American art. As the granddaughter of the legendary Margaret Tafoya and the daughter of Lee and Betty Tafoya, she was raised at the very heart of the Santa Clara pottery tradition. Linda's masterful synthesis of time-honored methods and contemporary vision has earned her top honors at both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair, solidifying her status as a premier master of Pueblo pottery.
