Linda Tafoya-Sanchez Traditional Red Carved Jar

This is an exceptional example of contemporary Santa Clara Pueblo pottery by Linda Tafoya-Sanchez. It beautifully showcases both her mastery of traditional techniques and the multi-generational artistic lineage she carries. Linda is renowned for her precise, clean, and expertly carved lines. The execution here is razor-sharp. The raised elements are flawlessly smooth, while the recessed, textured areas provide a beautiful matte contrast that emphasizes the jar's depth.

The highly reflective, mirror-like red slip is achieved through the arduous process of hand-polishing the unfired clay with smooth, inherited river stones.

Notice the subtle shimmer within the recessed, textured melon-swirl bands at the neck. Linda frequently integrates micaceous slips or clay into her carved backgrounds to introduce a glittering texture that contrasts against the high-gloss, stone-polished red finish.

The central band features two beautifully sculpted Avanyu figures tracking around the belly of the jar. In Pueblo culture, the horned water serpent represents water, rain, rivers, and the life-giving force necessary for survival in the arid Southwest. The lightning bolt extending from the Avanyu's mouth represents both the storm and the power of changing weather.

Framing the Avanyu are Greek-key style geometric fret bands that symbolize migration patterns or stylized clouds. The neck and the base feature elegant, dynamic melon swirls. This dynamic, swirling interpretation adds a modern, fluid sense of motion to a traditional shape.

Linda Tafoya Sanchez (b. 1962) comes from one of the most celebrated dynasties in Native American pottery. She is the daughter of Lee Tafoya and granddaughter of the legendary Margaret Tafoya. She was also deeply influenced and taught by her aunt, Mary Ester Archuleta. This particular jar highlights how perfectly she honors the monumental, deeply carved legacy of the Tafoya family while inserting her own signature elegance, fine line work, and distinctive use of micaceous textures.
