This historic jar was created by Lucy Lewis (1898-1992), a Matriarch of Acoma Pueblo and one of the most influential figures in the history of Native American ceramics. Since her passing in 1992, her works have become essential cornerstones of museum and private collections worldwide.
A Web of Fine Lines
This piece was executed in Lewis's most iconic and difficult style: Black-on-white Fine-line. The vessel is enveloped in a complex, mesmerizing web of ultra-thin black lines. To the observant eye, the geometry reveals hidden stars and floral motifs; to others, it offers a meditative pattern that invites the viewer to get lost in its precision.
Traditional Mastery
Lucy Lewis was a purist who honored every ancestral step of pottery production. She began each piece with prayers of thanks to Mother Earth. Every inch was hand-coiled and shaped using tools fashioned from dried gourds. The striking white slip and black pigment were derived entirely from natural clay and vegetal sources. The jar was brought to life in a traditional, handmade outdoor kiln.
Legacy of the Matriarch
Born atop the high mesa of Acoma, Lucy began her journey with clay at age eight. She is famously credited with the revival of Mimbres designs, bringing 1,000-year-old motifs back into the modern consciousness. This jar is a classic example of the "fine-line" aesthetic that earned her a place in the Smithsonian and a permanent legacy in American art.
