Michael Kabotie, Hopi Pueblo Painter and Jeweler

Michael Kabotie of Hopi Pueblo has combined modern Cubism with traditional Hopi motifs to create a magnificent sterling silver pendant. The pendant features various bird and water designs that are exquisitely cut and overlaid on an oxidized silver background. The centerpiece of the pendant is framed on the top and bottom with chiseled lines. It hangs on a sterling silver chain.

Greg Schaaf writes in American Indian Jewelry II A-L: "Michael Kabotie was one of the most influential Hopi artists of the late 20th century. He was the son of Fred Kabotie. Michael learned silversmithing by hanging around the guild workshop. Wally Sekayumptewa helped him get started. Michael is a highly respected artist. His jewelry is strong and bold in overlay design. Some of his work shows an influence from Cubism. Kabotie carries their style forward with Hopi design elements. The effect is powerful, both in his jewelry as well as his paintings." [Schaaf 2012:288]
