Nampeyo of Hano, Hopi-Tewa Potter and Matriarch

This small polychrome jar was made by the renowned Hopi-Tewa potter Nampeyo of Hano and likely dates to the first decade of the twentieth century. Painted in mineral pigments, the design features two symmetrical eagle tail motifs inspired by Sikyátki pottery, an ancient Hopi style that Nampeyo famously revived. These bold forms extend from the bottom of the jar up across the shoulder and to the neck, which is bordered with a wide framing line that includes a ceremonial line break — an intentional gap in the line reflecting traditional Pueblo beliefs about the release of spiritual energy.

Affixed to the side of the jar is a historic label reading “From The Hopi Villages,” a rare marker that ties the piece from the era of the Fred Harvey Company. Fred Harvey was instrumental in popularizing Native American arts through his shops and hotels along the Santa Fe Railway, and he played a key role in introducing Nampeyo’s work to a broader audience. These labels were among the earliest forms of artist branding used in the promotion of Native pottery.Affixed to the side of the jar is a historic label reading "From The Hopi Villages," a rare marker that ties the piece from the era of the Fred Harvey Company. Nampeyo (c. 1859-1942) is widely considered one of the most important figures in the history of Pueblo pottery. Drawing inspiration from ancient shards excavated near her village, she reimagined classic designs with her own refined aesthetic. Her mastery of form, balance, and traditional technique laid the foundation for generations of Hopi potters, including her descendants. This jar, with its elegant proportions, dynamic design, and rare label, stands as a powerful testament to Nampeyo's artistic legacy and early recognition as a cultural icon.
