Dolores Lewis Garcia (1938- ) image Adobe GalleryDolores Lewis Garcia is a daughter of Lucy M. Lewis, and was taught the craft of pottery making by her mother. She says her ancient ancestors, the Anasazi, inspire her designs.  The design on this jar has been identified as lightning.  It is a design inspired by Anasazi prehistoric pottery.  Normally, the white lightning bolts are outlined by black paint, however, Dolores chose to use an orange slip rather than black.  A refreshing change.

Dolores is from Acoma Pueblo and has received many awards at Santa Fe Indian Market and has been represented in many exhibitions, including in the 1993 Taipei International Exhibition of Traditional Arts & Crafts, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan.  She has been published in many books.

Dolores Lewis Garcia (1938- ) signatureThis jar was constructed in the traditional hand coil method and decorated with mineral paint.  It is signed Dolores Lewis Acoma, New Mexico and dated 8-88.  The jar was constructed from the white clay of Acoma and a white clay slip was applied to the exterior and polished to a high sheen. The orange slip used for outline in the design was applied over the white slip.

Condition: the Orange over White Slip Acoma Jar  is in original condition and has a fine ring

Provenance: from the collection of a family from New York who met Dolores at a New York gallery in 1985 when she accompanied her mother, Lucy Lewis, to attend the exhibit.  They purchased this jar a few years later.
