“Evening Grace” Pastel by Santa Fe Artist Elizabeth Sandia [SOLD]

“Evening Grace” is an original piece by Santa Fe artist Elizabeth Sandia.  The image focuses on a sprawling but shallow valley.  In the foreground, a hill—bare, mostly, save for a fence and a few trees—crosses the image, rising towards the sky on the left side.  Behind this, a second hill dips gently into the valley.  Behind the second hill, a brilliant burst of color appears in the form of a thick forested area.  Sandia’s soft pastels work beautifully for the leaves’ vibrant yellow tones.  Further back, a third hill is spotted with appropriately blurry blacks and yellows, creating a tree-lined horizon.

The appeal of “Evening Grace” lies in its deep, nuanced use of color.  The image is dominated by purple and blue, with similar tones used in slightly different ratios for the sky and the earth.  Down below, the board’s brown tone is allowed more room to breathe, serving as dirt, essentially.  It feels as though the sky’s rich purples and blues are being projected down onto the brown earth, linking the elements together to create a scene that feels both realistic and somehow mysterious.  “Evening Grace” is an enormously appealing and notably unique Southwestern landscape.

“Evening Grace” is signed Sandia in lower right.  It is signed and titled on verso.  It is framed under anti-reflective glass in a beautiful frame with gold, black and red stains.

Elizabeth Sandia is a Santa Fe-based artist who is originally from New York and is a former architect, illustrator, and graphic designer. Sandia's artistic experience is wide and varied. In the 1990s, she moved to Santa Fe and began painting full-time. She is a member of the Pastel Society of America, and she has placed works in many private and corporate collections.
