Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, Hopi Pueblo Potter

Artist Signature of Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, Hopi Pueblo PotterPriscilla Nampeyo expanded her repertoire on this small seed jar by using red slip and abbreviated Sikyatki migration pattern design.  A check of our history files does not reveal that we previously had a jar by her with red slip over the traditional tan color.  She used the Sikyatki-inspired migration pattern that potters generally fill the vessel with, from top to bottom, yet she cut it off at the shoulder, and resumed it near the base, allowing the red slip room for exposure.  This jar beautifully illustrates Priscilla Nampeyo's artistic genius as a potter and painter.

Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo (1924-2008) was a third-generation descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. Her mother was Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, and her grandmother was Annie Healing Nampeyo.  Nampeyo began teaching Priscilla when she was only seven years old.
