Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

This low and wide jar made by Maria and Julian Martinez was completed in the 1923-1924 period. It bears the name Marie on the underside. The jar widens and flows outward from the base and then makes a sharp reversal turn inward to the rim. The design is centered on this inward turning section. Julian placed four identical design panels, each of which has a diagonal line separating the two matte triangular elements.

Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso Pueblo is probably the most famous of all pueblo potters. She and her husband, Julian, discovered in 1918 how to produce the now-famous black-on-black pottery and they spent the remainder of their careers perfecting and producing it for museums and collectors worldwide.
