Rose Montoya, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Artist signature of Rose Montoya, Santa Clara Pueblo PotterThis redware jar by Rose Montoya of Santa Clara Pueblo reflects a strong grasp of traditional technique and confident craftsmanship. Although little is known about Montoya's career, the refined execution and stylistic elements of the piece suggest it was created in the latter half of the 20th century, demonstrating her clear command of form, finish, and design.

The jar features a broad, stone-polished red base that occupies approximately one-third of its surface area. Above this base, a bold Avanyu (Water Serpent) design has been expertly carved in three distinct segments, wrapping around nearly two-thirds of the vessel. The contrast between the matte red slip used in the carved negative space and the high polish of the Avanyu and upper body creates striking depth to the design.

The rim and inner lip are also highly polished, adding a refined touch that enhances the overall harmony of the form. The jar is signed on the bottom Rose Montoya Santa Clara Pueblo and is in excellent condition with only two minor surface abrasions, as would be expected in a vintage piece.

Condition: excellent condition with two minor surface abrasions.

Provenance: This Santa Clara Pueblo Red Avanyu Jar by Rose Montoya is from a collector in Santa Fe.
