Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso Pueblo Potter

The Edward-Dean Museum is located in Southern California in Riverside County. It was created by Edward Eberle and Dean Stout and derives its name from these original owners and donors. The structures were built in 1957 and given to the County of Riverside in 1964. The Edward-Dean Museum is a historic home that is committed to preserving its collection of 16th to 19th century decorative arts while offering social, cultural and educational enrichment.

In June of 1979 the Edward-Dean Museum in Cherry Valley California hosted the first of five summer programs featuring the work of the Martinez family from San Ildefonso Pueblo. Five generations were present for the opening of the show; Maria and her sister, Clara Montoya; Maria's son and his wife, Adam and Santana Martinez; a grand-daughter, Anita Martinez; great-granddaughter Barbara Gonzales (who taught the class) and her husband, Robert, and their children, Cavan and Aaron.

This is the poster that was used to advertise the show. It features images of pottery with two iconic designs for which Maria is known—the Avanyu, or plumed serpent, and the eagle feather design. There is an image of a spider design seed jar by Barbara Gonzales. The poster was autographed by Maria, with the name she used for autographs—Maria Poveka.

It is an historically important example demonstrating the wide-reaching influence of Maria Martinez and members of her family of San Ildefonso Pueblo.
